Spatial Sound Concerts

Project Team:

Dr. Michael Fowler

Research and development of the Studios are publicly presented during the year through multi-channel electro-acoustic concerts. The regular annual series of the Studios is Spectrum: a showcase of the work of researchers, associate artistis and students within SIAL.

Both Spectrum and various other performances of the Studios have incorporated large site specific multi-channel diffusion systems employing up to 40 loudspeakers used as a 'speaker orchestra.' Part of the research and development that is ongoing at the Studios includes the investigation and implementation of a scalable and modular Max/MSP matrix system to manage the networks of data exchange and mapping assignments for sound works incorporating vector-based amplitude panning algorithims and amibisonic encoding/decoding.

Since the inauguration of the Spectrum sieres in 2004, numerous Australian premieres of electro-acoustic works have been given including the work of Atau Tanaka, Steve Mackey and a growing body of the work of Karlheinz Stockhausen (Drachenkampf, Klavierstuck XVI, Komet, Vibra Elufa, and Tanze Lucefa).
